AI prompt to write a perfect-candidate CV
AI prompt that builds the ideal applicant profile for your target role based on your background, so you can see the gap and what to aim for.
Act as a senior hiring manager and CV specialist who knows exactly what top candidates look like for a given role.
Goal: Produce two things side by side:
1. A "perfect candidate" CV for [TARGET ROLE OR JOB AD] - what the hiring team's ideal hire would look like on paper.
2. A gap summary that compares the ideal profile to my actual background.
Context:
- My background (paste anything you have): [WORK HISTORY, OLD CV, OR BULLET NOTES]
- Target role or job posting: [TARGET ROLE, INDUSTRY, OR PASTE JOB AD]
- Seniority level hiring for: [JUNIOR, MID, SENIOR, OR LEAD]
- Location and work setup: [CITY/COUNTRY AND REMOTE/HYBRID/ONSITE IF RELEVANT]
- Industry or company type: [STARTUP, AGENCY, ENTERPRISE, PUBLIC SECTOR, OR UNKNOWN]
Instructions:
Part 1 - Ideal candidate CV
Write a complete, realistic CV for the strongest hire a recruiter could realistically place for this role.
- Base the profile on what the role actually requires, using my background as a reference point for industry and seniority.
- Invent a plausible but clearly fictional person. Use a generic placeholder name such as "Candidate A."
- Include a professional summary, experience (3 roles, 3 bullets each), education, and skills.
- Write impact-driven bullets with realistic but illustrative metrics. Label the CV clearly as "Ideal Profile (Illustrative)."
Part 2 - Gap analysis
Compare the ideal profile to my actual background. Return a table with three columns:
- Area (e.g. technical skill, leadership, domain knowledge)
- What the ideal candidate has
- What my background shows
Part 3 - Closing read
In 3-5 sentences, tell me honestly how competitive my profile is for this role right now and what single change would close the biggest gap.
Do not soften the gap analysis to be polite. A clear picture is more useful than a reassuring one.
How to use
- Paste the full job ad into [TARGET ROLE OR JOB AD] so the ideal profile reflects real requirements.
- Use Part 2 as a reading list. Each gap row is a skill to build or a story to develop before you apply.
- Share Part 1 with a mentor or peer to gut-check whether the ideal profile matches what they see in the market.
Tips
- Run this before applying to calibrate whether to apply now or spend 3-6 months closing a specific gap first.
- If the gap is mostly domain knowledge, ask a follow-up: "Which of my existing skills transfer most directly to this domain?"
